Wu Bangguo Meets with Iranian President Ahmadinejad

In the afternoon of June 7, 2012, Chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC) Wu Bangguo met with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in the Great Hall of the People.

Wu said that China and Iran are both ancient civilizations and people on both sides enjoy traditional friendship. Since the establishment of diplomatic relations, the two countries have maintained sound relations despite the interference of external factors. The frequent high-level contacts, increasing political mutual trust, stable cooperation in the fields of trade, energy and infrastructure construction and deepening cultural exchanges between the two countries have brought tangible benefits to their people. China adheres to the path of peaceful development, pursues the independent foreign policy and is committed to developing friendly relations and mutually beneficial cooperation with all countries. Iran is a major developing country and a major power in West Asia and North Africa. Following the principle of mutual respect and equality, China is willing to further strengthen relations with Iran, maintain friendly exchanges at all levels, actively explore ways to deepen pragmatic cooperation in the new situation and promote greater development of the bilateral relations.

Talking about parliamentary exchanges, Wu said that the NPC supports the development of friendly relations between China and Iran and is willing to actively carry out friendly exchanges and cooperation with the new Islamic Consultative Assembly of Iran, strengthen mutual learning of running the state and democracy and legal construction, step up communication and coordination in the Asian and international parliamentary organizations and give greater play to the role of parliamentary exchanges of promoting the development of relations between states.

Ahmadinejad said that Iran cherishes the traditional friendship with China. His country is full of respect for the industrious and intelligent Chinese nation and deeply admires the great achievements of China's economic and social development. The Iranian side is satisfied with the development of bilateral relations in recent years which it believes serves the interests of the two countries and the people. It is willing to continue to strengthen and deepen the friendly cooperation with China and support the two parliaments to strengthen exchanges and make greater contributions to enhancing the friendship between the people and boosting the pragmatic cooperation.
