2009-10-20

On October 19, 2009, visiting Chinese State Councilor Dai Bingguo met respectively with British Chancellor of the Exchequer & Chair of the China Task Force Alistair Darling and Foreign Secretary David Miliband in London.

Dai said bilateral cooperation has been developing in an unprecedented width and depth. There are more common interests between the two nations, and Britain and China are facing sound development opportunities. Since their establishment, the Task Forces established by the two sides have been playing a positive role in boosting bilateral cooperation.

Dai said standing at a new historical starting point, China and Britain should look at and handle bilateral ties from a strategic and long-term perspective and promote further development of China-Britain comprehensive strategic partnership. The two countries should maintain high-level contacts, strengthen political mutual trust and pragmatic cooperation, deepen economic, trade and cultural exchanges and consolidate the basis of public opinion for bilateral ties. Dai said the two nations should strengthen consultation and coordination on the issues related to the international framework and other major strategic issues and join hands to deal with global challenges such as the international financial crisis, climate change, environment and energy security.

The British side spoke highly of the current positive momentum of all-round development for UK-China relations and praised China's positive role in addressing the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue, financial crisis and climate change. The British side also said China's development is an important opportunity for Britain and the whole world. The two nations should make joint efforts to improve the mechanism of the Task Forces on bilateral relations and strengthen exchange and cooperation in politics, economy and trade, science and technology, education and culture. Britain is willing to enhance strategic dialogue and cooperation with China and jointly address global challenges.
