On October 12, 2009, Chinese Assistant Foreign Minister Zhai Jun met with the visiting Director of the Office of the Minister of External Relations and International Cooperation of Burundi.

Zhai made positive comments on bilateral ties, saying that China cherishes the traditional friendship with Burundi and deems it a good friend and partner in Africa. China is ready to work with Burundi to deepen pragmatic cooperation in all areas and push bilateral friendly cooperative relations to one new level after another.

The Burundian side noted that the Burundian government and people attach importance to the friendship and cooperation with China, thank for China's support of Burundi's peace process and national reconstruction and hope to enhance cooperation with China on education, medical care and energy.

Both sides also exchanged views on the preparations of the fourth ministerial conference of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), East African integration and the Somalia issue.
